about
‘Tawhito’ is the second single from genre-defying group Matawaka, and fuses traditional Maori music and instruments with the music traditions of India, on a solid foundation of modern Dubstep.
‘Tawhito’, meaning ‘the ancient ones’ is a karakia or prayer, calling on the ancestors and the ancient Gods to guide their descendants in these troubled times.
lyrics
Translated, the lyrics are a desperate cry for help:
Return the ancient ones
Return the ancestors
Return the Gods of the ancient world
From Hawaiki the great homeland
From Hawaiki the distant homeland
From the dark night
From the long night
Guide us, your descendants,
Who sit confused in this modern world
The survivors, the sufferers,
Cry out for your help
